The former professional cricketer, husband, father of three and current full-time broadcaster is a self-described outdoorsman. And he's serious about sun safety. Hayden also confronted the reality of cancer personally, after his dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and also had polyps, which can turn cancerous if undetected, removed from his bowel. He’s had multiple skin cancers removed from his face and chest and is regularly having treatment on his lips. As an ambassador, Hayden shares his personal experiences to promote SunSmart habits.
Hayden was appointed by the Queensland Government in March 2013 to head a tourism campaign aiming to attract more Indian tourists to Australia.
Hayden is an Ambassador for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation.
Matthew Lawrence Hayden, born on October 29, 1971, in Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia, established himself as a powerful left-handed opening batsman in international cricket. His career spanned fifteen years, primarily with the Australian national team, where he contributed significantly to their success during the ‘golden era’ from 2000 to 2008 in Test and One Day International (ODI) cricket. Hayden’s aggressive batting style and consistent performance made him a key figure in Australia’s formidable line-up.
Hayden holds the record for the highest individual score by an Australian batsman in Tests, scoring 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003. This achievement remained the world record for an individual Test innings until Brian Lara surpassed it in 2004, and it continues to be the second-highest score in Test history. He was a crucial member of the Australian teams that won the ICC Cricket World Cup in both 2003 and 2007, showcasing his talent on the world stage. Domestically, Hayden played for Queensland from 1991/92 to 2007/08, and also had stints with Hampshire and Northamptonshire in the English County Championship. His Twenty20 career included playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, where he won the Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer in 2009, and for the Brisbane Heat in Australia’s Big Bash League.
After retiring from all forms of cricket in September 2012, Hayden continued his involvement in the sport as a commentator. In 2017, he was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. His post-retirement career has also seen him take on coaching roles, notably as the Batting Coach for Pakistan in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and as a team mentor for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Beyond cricket, Hayden is known for his passion for cooking, publishing two cookbooks, and his strong advocacy for sun safety, a cause he champions due to his personal experiences with skin cancer. He also serves as an Ambassador for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation.
