Born James Thomas Brooks on October 31, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri, Tom Brooks embarked on his musical journey blending classical training with rock influences. While studying piano at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, he served as Student Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony and Assistant Conductor of the Bach Society. During this early period, he also produced a series of children’s albums and composed music for advertising clients such as Anheuser-Busch and McDonald’s. His career began to focus on live praise and worship music, producing albums like “Behold His Majesty” and “Glory to the Lamb.” These early recordings, which combined live symphony orchestra with a rock rhythm section, laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.
A significant turning point occurred in 1985 when Brooks became the founding producer for Integrity Music and the “Hosanna Music” series. He agreed to produce live praise and worship albums on a bi-monthly basis, leading to over 100 successful albums. His work with Integrity Music earned him 6 Platinum Albums, 12 Gold Albums, a Latin Grammy Award, and a GMA Dove Award. Notable albums from this period include “Lift Him Up” and “Sing Out” featuring Ron Kenoly, and “Give Thanks” featuring Don Moen. Beyond production, Brooks is a talented keyboardist and serves as the Music Director for Alan Parsons and the Alan Parsons Live Project. He has conducted orchestras internationally, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, showcasing his versatility as a musician and conductor.
Brooks’ career continues to evolve with a focus on education and broader musical collaborations. He is the Director of the Center for Commercial Music at California Baptist University and a Music Professor at Hope International University. His book, “The Language of Music,” is published by Hal Leonard Publishing. Recent milestones include performing for NASA at the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing, orchestrating for Saturday Night Live performances by Chance the Rapper, and for Kanye West’s Sunday Service at Coachella. He performed with numerous renowned artists at fund-raising events for natural disasters and has been involved in diverse projects ranging from Christian music to progressive rock, solidifying his reputation as a respected figure in the music industry.
