About

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, born in Concord, California, on July 9, 1956, began his journey in acting without formal college training. His early life involved frequent relocations due to his parents’ divorce, and he describes his childhood as “fractured.” Despite not being cast in college plays, Hanks pursued community theater, which eventually led him to Cleveland, where his professional acting career commenced. He gained initial recognition through his co-starring role in the television series “Bosom Buddies” (1980–1982). His film breakthrough came with “Splash” (1984), a fantasy-comedy that became a box office success. This led to further comedic roles, but it was his performance in “Big” (1988) that solidified his status as a major Hollywood talent and earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

The 1990s marked a significant turn in Hanks’ career, as he transitioned from primarily comedic roles to more dramatic and critically acclaimed performances. This “modern era” of his career started with “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and deepened with “Philadelphia” (1993), for which he won his first Academy Award for Best Actor, portraying a gay lawyer with AIDS. He achieved a consecutive Best Actor Oscar for his role in “Forrest Gump” (1994), a film that grossed over $600 million worldwide and further established his reputation. Throughout this decade, he also lent his voice to the character of Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story” (1995), a role he continues to reprise. He made his directorial debut with “That Thing You Do!” (1996) and received another Best Actor nomination for “Saving Private Ryan” (1998).

Into the 2000s and beyond, Hanks continued to expand his repertoire, often collaborating with prominent directors like Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Notable projects included “Cast Away” (2000), for which he received another Oscar nomination, and the highly successful “The Da Vinci Code” (2006) series. He has also been a prolific producer, notably executive producing the Emmy-winning miniseries “Band of Brothers” (2001) and “The Pacific” (2010), contributing to historical narratives. Hanks made his Broadway debut in “Lucky Guy” (2013), earning a Tony Award nomination. His continued active presence in the film industry, including recent roles in “Elvis” (2022) and “Asteroid City” (2023), underscores his enduring relevance and appeal. He is also a recipient of numerous honors, including the AFI Life Achievement Award (2002) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2016).
