Tom Welling

Thomas Joseph Welling was born on April 26, 1977, in Putnam Valley, New York. His early life involved frequent family relocations, leading him to live in Wisconsin, Delaware, and Michigan. He attended Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan, where he participated in plays before shifting his focus to sports, particularly baseball and soccer. After graduating from high school at eighteen, Welling initially pursued work in construction, opting not to attend college. In 1998, a casting director discovered him at a party in Nantucket, suggesting he try modeling. He subsequently modeled for Louisa Modeling Agency until 2000, working for brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Calvin Klein after moving to Los Angeles.

Welling transitioned into acting, participating in casting calls that led to his first significant roles. In 2001, he appeared as Rob “Karate Rob” Meltzer in six episodes of the CBS legal drama ‘Judging Amy’. He also had smaller roles in the pilot episodes of UPN’s ‘Special Unit 2’ and Fox’s ‘Undeclared’. His breakthrough came with the lead role of Clark Kent in The WB’s hit series ‘Smallville’, a part he initially declined twice, citing concerns that the role was larger than he felt prepared for. However, he eventually accepted, recognizing the show’s potential and a personal connection to the character, which made him a household name. He portrayed Clark Kent for ten seasons, from 2001 to 2011.

Beyond television, Welling expanded his career into film and production. He made his feature film debut in 2003, starring as Charlie Baker in ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’, a role he reprised in its 2005 sequel, ‘Cheaper by the Dozen 2’. In 2005, he co-starred in the horror film ‘The Fog’. Welling later took on roles in the historical drama ‘Parkland’ (2013) and the sports drama ‘Draft Day’ (2014). He also ventured into directing, helming seven episodes of ‘Smallville’ between 2006 and 2011, and served as an executive producer for ‘Smallville’ (2009–2011) and the CW series ‘Hellcats’ (2010–2011). In 2017, he returned to television in ‘Lucifer’ as Lt. Marcus Pierce, appearing in 19 episodes. In 2019, he reprised his role as Clark Kent in the Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and in 2022, starred as Samuel Campbell in ‘The Winchesters’.
