Tony DeAngelo is one of the best ice hockey players in America; currently signed with the New York Rangers, the defenseman was selected by Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round, nineteenth overall, of the NHL Entry Draft in 2014, age just nineteen.
Hailing from New Jersey, the up-and-coming player has been competing since 2008 when he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Philadelphia Flyers minor ice hockey team. The following year, he kicked off his junior career with the United States Hockey League’s Cedar Rapids Roughriders as the league’s youngest player. Even this early in his career, DeAngelo caught the attention of many around the country and became a second-round selection in the Ontario Hockey League Draft in 2011. He went on to play with the Sarnia Sting, skating with the team for four seasons before being traded in 2015 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The same year, he won the Max Kaminsky Trophy, marking DeAngelo as the OHL’s most outstanding defenseman. In the same season, he won CHL Defenceman of the Year, a high achievement that made sure all eyes were on DeAngelo.
In 2014, DeAngelo made headlines when he signed a three-year contract with Tampa Bay Lightning and was assigned to the Syracuse Crunch for the 2015-2016 season. His professional career truly kicked off in 2016 when he was traded to the Arizona Coyotes, making his NHL debut against the Colorado Avalanche,
The following year, DeAngelo was traded to the New York Rangers, signing a one-year contract in 2019. He set a new record for points in a regular-season game by a defenseman in January 2020, with three goals and two assists. 2020 marked DeAngelo’s breakout year, and October he signed a $9.6m contract with the New York Rangers. At this point, DeAngelo had National Hockey League career highs in goals, assists and points in 68 games in the last season playing with the Rangers, and one assist in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.
