Jordan Binnington made history as the first rookie goaltender in the National Hockey League (NHL) to earn 16 wins in a single postseason. The Canadian was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, and after several seasons in the minor leagues was called up in December 2018 to become the starting goaltender for the Blues. His play helped the Blues climb from last place in the league to victory in the 2019 Stanley Cup Championship. Internationally Binnington has represented Canada and played in the 2013 IIHF World U20 Championship.
Raised in Toronto and Richmond Hill, Ontario, Binnington began his playing career as a junior for the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League. By the time of 2011 NHL Entry Draft he was ranked as the OHL’s top eligible goaltender, and was selected in the third round by the Blues.
Binnington first made the NHL stand up and notice when he was recalled to the Blues in December 2018 after playing in the minor leagues. The Canadian made 25 saves in his first NHL start in a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, and became the 35th goaltender in the history of the NHL to earn a shutout in his first start. Two months later he was named the NHL First Star of the Week after helping the Blues to six consecutive wins, and he was named NHL Rookie of the Month in both February and March 2019.
