Tyson Cleotis Chandler was born on October 2, 1982, in Hanford, California. He began playing basketball at the age of three in Hanford before moving to San Bernardino, California, at nine years old. Chandler attended Dominguez High School in Compton, California, where he quickly became noted for his basketball prowess. He played alongside future NBA player Tayshaun Prince during his freshman year and garnered significant attention, earning selections to the Parade Magazine and USA Today All-America Teams, as well as the McDonald’s High School All-America Team in 2001. His high school career culminated in leading Dominguez to a state championship, averaging 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 blocks per game in his senior year.
Chandler declared for the 2001 NBA draft directly out of high school and was selected as the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers, subsequently traded to the Chicago Bulls for Elton Brand. His NBA career spanned from 2001 to 2020, playing for multiple teams, including the Chicago Bulls (2001–2006), New Orleans Hornets (2006–2009), Charlotte Bobcats (2009–2010), Dallas Mavericks (2010–2011), New York Knicks (2011–2014), Phoenix Suns (2015–2018), Los Angeles Lakers (2018–2019), and Houston Rockets (2019–2020). A significant career achievement was his integral role as starting center for the Dallas Mavericks, contributing to their first NBA championship in 2011. He was recognized as the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 while with the New York Knicks, where he also earned All-NBA Third Team honors and was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in 2013. Chandler also won gold medals with the US national team at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Beyond his playing career, Chandler transitioned into coaching, joining the Dallas Mavericks as a player development coach in 2021. In this role, he works directly with the team’s centers, including Dereck Lively II, focusing on enhancing their skills and understanding of the game. This move is part of the “Mavs Legends” coaching program, initiated by owner Mark Cuban, aiming to leverage the experience of former team champions.
