About

Valentin Chmerkovskiy was born on March 24, 1986, in Odesa, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union (now Ukraine). He immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, with his family in 1994 when he was eight years old. Chmerkovskiy is a Ukrainian-American professional dancer, choreographer, and television personality, fluent in both Russian and English. His early career was marked by significant achievements in competitive dance, including becoming a two-time IDSF World Latin Dance Champion (Junior and Youth) and a 14-time U.S. National Latin Champion across Junior, U21/Youth, and Adult Amateur categories. In 2001, at the age of 15, he and his partner Diana Olonetskaya made history as the first American dance team to win a world junior championship title. He also performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a classically trained violinist.

Chmerkovskiy rose to widespread recognition through his appearances on the U.S. version of “Dancing with the Stars,” where he achieved three wins with celebrity partners Rumer Willis (Season 20, 2015), Laurie Hernandez (Season 23, 2016), and Xochitl Gomez (Season 32, 2023). He has been a professional dancer on the show since Season 13 in 2011, having previously made guest appearances in earlier seasons. Beyond “Dancing with the Stars,” Chmerkovskiy has expanded his television presence, appearing on Netflix’s “Fuller House,” Fox’s “Flirty Dancing,” and serving as a judge on “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors.” He also featured in the 2021 Amazon Prime film “Being the Ricardos.” In 2018, he authored his memoir, “I’ll Never Change my Name,” reflecting on his life as an Eastern European immigrant and his career journey.

Demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, Chmerkovskiy is a co-founder and owner of Dance With Me studios, a national network of dance studios dedicated to making dance accessible to individuals of all skill levels. The Dance With Me brand operates nine studios across the New York metropolitan area (including Glen Rock, Fort Lee, Glen Cove, SoHo, Midtown Manhattan, Stamford) and other locations in Southlake, Texas, The Woodlands, Texas, and Summerlin, Nevada. He is also actively involved in philanthropy, supporting organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of LA, and Pencils of Promise. In response to the 2022 humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Chmerkovskiy, along with his brother and father, launched Baranova 27, a charity that provides funds and humanitarian aid, including medical and hygiene supplies, to those affected in Ukraine. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” professional Jenna Johnson-Chmerkovskiy, and their son, Rome Valentin Chmerkovskiy, born in 2023.
