Valentyna Oleksandrivna Semerenko, widely known as Valj Semerenko, was born on January 18, 1986, in Krasnopillia, Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. She began her athletic career in cross-country skiing alongside her twin sister, Vita, during elementary school. The sisters later transitioned to biathlon, where Valj commenced her international competitive journey one year before her sister. Her early career saw her participate in the Junior World Championships in Maurienne, France, in 2004. In 2005, she earned two medals at the Junior World Championships and one at the Junior European Championships, marking her as a promising talent in the sport. Valj Semerenko made her Biathlon World Cup debut on December 17, 2005, in Osrblie, Slovakia, finishing 47th in the sprint competition.
Her career progressed with significant achievements, including qualifying for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, where she competed in the individual race. Valj achieved her first World Championships medal in 2008, a silver in the 4×6 km relay in Östersund, Sweden. Her first individual World Cup podium occurred on February 4, 2011, in a sprint event in Presque Isle, United States. A turning point in her career was at the 2013 World Championships, where she secured a bronze medal in the individual race and a silver in the relay. On December 15, 2013, Valj earned her first individual World Cup victory by winning a pursuit race in Annecy, France. The pinnacle of her career came at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where she won a gold medal in the Women’s 4×6 km relay alongside Juliya Dzhyma, Vita Semerenko, and Olena Pidhrushna.
The 2014–15 season was her most successful, with four individual podium finishes and a third-place ranking in the overall World Cup classification. During this season, she also won the World Team Challenge with Serhiy Semenov. Valj clinched her first individual biathlon world championship title in 2015 by winning the 12.5km mass start race in Kontiolahti, Finland. Despite facing challenges with illnesses and physical conditions in subsequent seasons, which led to missed races, she continued to compete at an elite level. She participated in the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics, further solidifying her extensive career in biathlon.
