Vesna Fabjan

Vesna Fabjan was born on March 13, 1985, in Kranj, Slovenia. Her interest in cross-country skiing began at a young age, influenced by her sports-active family, particularly her brother Aleš. Fabjan started her formal training in cross-country skiing at age eight, quickly demonstrating natural talent. Early in her career, she balanced athletic pursuits with academic responsibilities, being recognized with the Rok Petrovič Fund award in 2000 for her ability to combine sport and study successfully. Her early competitive successes included winning medals and cups in national and international junior competitions.

Fabjan’s career progressed through successful youth categories and European Cups. A significant turning point came with her victory at the Universiade in 2005, which helped open doors to the World Cup circuit. In 2008, she became the Under 23 World Champion in individual sprint, solidifying her presence in the sport. She achieved her first World Cup victory in a sprint freestyle event in Rybinsk, Russia, in January 2010, followed by another win in February 2011 at the same location. She participated in four Winter Olympics, making her debut at Turin 2006. Her most notable Olympic achievement was securing a bronze medal in the individual sprint event at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Throughout her career, Fabjan consistently competed at the highest levels, including multiple FIS Nordic World Ski Championships appearances. Her best finish at the World Championships was fourth in the individual sprint in Oslo in 2011, and she also placed ninth in the team sprint in Sapporo in 2007. She achieved five individual podium finishes and one team podium finish in World Cup events, including two individual victories. Fabjan officially announced her retirement from cross-country skiing in June 2020 after a distinguished career.
