Viviane Bowman, known professionally as Vickie Winans, was born on October 18, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were Mattie Bowman and Aaron Bowman, a contractor and carpenter. She was one of twelve siblings. Winans began her musical journey at the age of eight, joining the choir at International Gospel Center. During her teenage years, she formed a gospel group called International Sounds of Deliverance. Her early experiences laid the foundation for a career that would span over three decades in gospel music. Later, she would be influenced by her second husband, Marvin Winans of The Winans, to pursue music professionally.
Winans released her debut studio album, “Be Encouraged,” on July 31, 1987, through Light Records. This album achieved notable success, peaking at number three on Billboard’s Top Spiritual Albums chart and earning a nomination for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female, at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards in 1988. Her second album, “Total Victory” (1989), also received a Grammy nomination despite facing challenges with Light Records’ financial issues. Her career experienced a significant breakthrough with her first live album, “Live in Detroit” (1997), which featured the popular gospel hit “Long as I Got King Jesus.” This album reached number ten on the Top Gospel Albums chart and received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. “Live in Detroit II” (1999) further cemented her success, peaking at number three on the Top Gospel Albums chart and selling over 112,000 copies within its first month, earning her multiple Stellar Awards.
Following a four-year hiatus, Winans released “Bringing It All Together” in 2003, which became her first album to top Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, remaining there for nine weeks. The album’s lead single, “Shake Yourself Loose,” was widely successful on gospel radio. This period also saw her win several Stellar Awards, including Artist of the Year. In 2005, she embarked on the Rising Star Tour, sponsored by Chrysler Financial. She continued her chart success with “Woman to Woman: Songs of Life” (2006) and “How I Got Over” (2009), both reaching number one on the Top Gospel Albums chart. In 2007, Winans founded her own record label, Destiny Joy Records, named after her daughter who passed away shortly after birth.
