About

Vidya Iyer, known professionally as Vidya Vox, was born on September 26, 1990, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her family relocated to the United States when she was eight years old, and she was raised in Virginia. From the age of five, she commenced her training in Carnatic music, concurrently engaging with Western music. During her upbringing, she experienced an identity crisis and faced bullying due to her Indian heritage, which led her to attempt to conceal her cultural background. However, she later developed pride in her culture. Her grandmother served as an initial inspiration for her pursuit of Indian classical music. She pursued higher education at George Washington University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences, studying psychology and biomedical sciences. Following her graduation, she spent two years in India to deepen her musical knowledge and skills.

Vidya Vox launched her YouTube channel in April 2015. Through this platform, she began sharing music videos that blended diverse genres. Her channel has since garnered over 7 million subscribers and her videos have accumulated over 906 million views. A notable achievement was her mashup of “Closer / Kabira,” which combined “Closer” by The Chainsmokers with “Kabira” from the film “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.” This mashup achieved over 55 million views within seven months. In 2016, she released her EP, “Kuthu Fire,” which included original compositions and collaborations. This EP was produced by Shankar Tucker, with whom she also co-wrote several tracks. The EP featured original songs like “Diamonds” (co-written by Arjun Coomarsamy) and “Be Free” (Pallivaalu Bhadravattakam) featuring Vandana Iyer. She has regularly performed in a band led by Shankar Tucker, alongside percussionist Jomy George.

Her career has seen her perform at various prestigious venues globally, including the White House, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (India), and Webster Hall. She has also graced stages at Festivals Des Artes on Réunion, for INK Women, in Suriname, Dubai, and at the Meru Concert Series in the Netherlands. Her musical style, characterized by its seamless integration of Indian and Western influences, has enabled her to achieve significant recognition within the global music scene. Beyond her highly successful mashups, she has released several original works, such as “Minnale” (2018), which partnered with Global Desi, and albums like “Mad Dreams” (2019) and “Sundari” (2024), further solidifying her position as a creative artist who fuses cultural elements within her music.
