Vinicius José Paixão de Oliveira Júnior, born on July 12, 2000, in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, began his footballing journey at Flamengo’s academy in 2006. His early talent was recognized in futsal classes before he transitioned to football, showing significant promise that prompted Flamengo to sign him at 16. He made his senior debut for Flamengo in May 2017 in the Brazilian Série A. A few weeks later, Real Madrid secured his transfer for a record fee for a player under 18, with the move becoming effective after his 18th birthday in July 2018.
At Real Madrid, Vinicius Jr. initially joined Real Madrid Castilla before integrating into the senior squad. His debut in September 2018 marked the beginning of his professional career in Spanish football. Over subsequent seasons, he steadily developed his skills, contributing to significant team successes. A turning point came during the 2021–22 season where he became a key offensive player, forming an effective partnership with Karim Benzema and notably scoring the winning goal in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final. His role continued to expand, culminating in him inheriting the number 7 jersey for the 2023–24 season.
Beyond his on-field achievements, Vinicius Jr. has become a prominent voice against racism in football. In 2023, he faced racial abuse incidents in Spain, which he publicly condemned, advocating for stronger measures and penalties. His activism led to his appointment as a FIFA anti-racism committee leader and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Education for All in 2024. He also founded Instituto Vini Jr. in 2021 to support education for disadvantaged children in Brazil, demonstrating his commitment to social impact.
