Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinee C. Stringer established herself as a foundational figure in women’s collegiate basketball, beginning her coaching journey in 1971 at Cheyney State. Her strategic coaching and commitment to player development were evident throughout her tenure. In 1995, Stringer moved to Rutgers University, where she spent 27 years meticulously building the women’s basketball program into a national contender.
During her time at Rutgers, she led the team to two additional Final Four appearances in 2000 and 2007, solidifying her reputation as a coach capable of transforming programs and achieving sustained excellence. She reached her 800th career win in 2008, a significant milestone that preceded her enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Her impact extends beyond win-loss records, as evidenced by the U.S. Sports Academy establishing the C.
Vivian Stringer Coaching Award in 2002, created to honor women coaches who demonstrate outstanding achievement. In 2018, Stringer made history by achieving her 1,000th career victory, becoming the first African-American college basketball coach to reach this remarkable milestone. After a career spanning five decades, she retired in 2022, leaving an indelible mark on collegiate sports. In recognition of her profound contributions, the basketball court at Jersey Mikes Arena was proudly renamed in her honor in 2022, cementing her legacy as one of basketballs most influential figures.
