William Jack Poulter was born in Hammersmith, London, on January 28, 1993. His mother, Caroline Barrah, was a nurse, and his father, Neil Poulter, is a professor of cardiology. Poulter attended The Harrodian School, where his drama teacher encouraged his audition for “Son of Rambow” (2007). In this film, he portrayed Lee Carter, marking his professional debut. His early career also included roles in the E4 sketch comedy series “School of Comedy” (2009) and as Eustace Scrubb in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010), filmed in Queensland, Australia.
Poulter’s career progressed with his first American film role as Kenny Rossmore in “We’re the Millers” (2013), which was a box office success. This performance led to his recognition with the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2014, as well as MTV Movie Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Kiss. In 2012, he enrolled at the University of Bristol to study drama but left after a year to pursue a role in “The Maze Runner” (2014), where he played Gally, a part he described as a “turning point” in his career. He reprised this role in “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” (2018).
His filmography expanded to include diverse roles such as Jim Bridger in “The Revenant” (2015), the racist police officer Philip Krauss in “Detroit” (2017), Mark in the horror film “Midsommar” (2019), and Colin Ritman in “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” (2018). More recently, Poulter joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Adam Warlock in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023). On television, he received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work in the Hulu miniseries “Dopesick” (2021) and the FX series “The Bear” (2023–2026), further cementing his standing in the industry.
