About

Willard Carroll Smith II, born on September 25, 1968, in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began his career as a rapper under the name The Fresh Prince. He formed the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince with his childhood friend Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes, releasing humorous and radio-friendly songs like “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Summertime.” The duo gained critical acclaim, winning the first Grammy Award in the Rap category in 1988 for “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” Despite early financial challenges, including a significant tax debt, Smith’s popularity surged when he starred in the NBC television series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” from 1990 to 1996, a show built around his persona that marked the start of his acting career.

Following the success of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Smith transitioned to film, quickly becoming a prominent box office draw. His early major film roles included “Bad Boys” (1995), “Independence Day” (1996), and “Men in Black” (1997), all of which achieved significant commercial success. Concurrently with his film career, Smith launched a successful solo music career, releasing albums like “Big Willie Style” (1997) and “Willennium” (1999), which featured hit singles such as “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” and “Wild Wild West.” He has starred in numerous blockbuster films, becoming the only actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office and eleven consecutive films gross over $150 million internationally. His leading roles in films like “Ali” (2001) and “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006) earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, demonstrating his versatility and depth as a performer.

Smith’s career continued to evolve with roles in diverse projects such as “I, Robot” (2004), “Hitch” (2005), “I Am Legend” (2007), “Hancock” (2008), and “Aladdin” (2019). He achieved his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2022 for his portrayal of Richard Williams in “King Richard” (2021). Throughout his career, Smith has been recognized for his consistent ability to deliver commercially successful films, with his movies collectively grossing over $6.6 billion at the global box office by 2014. He has also ventured into production, with his company Westbrook Studios, and maintains a significant presence in music and media.
