2017 has been a great year for music, with stellar releases dominating both the charts and the underground. Many of the year’s best tracks were put out by artists on the MN2S booking agency roster. Here are ten of the best.
Luis Fonsi – Despacito feat. Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber [Universal Latin]
No one can talk about the music of 2017 without mentioning Luis Fonsi’s colossal hit ‘Despacito’. Released in January, the track went on to be the song of the summer, and continued to dominate the airwaves for the rest of the year.
Given a new lease of life by a Justin Bieber remix in April, the original song’s visuals became the most-watched video in YouTube history, racking up an astonishing 4 billion views. Fonsi won several Latin Grammys for ‘Despacito’, and it’s been nominated for multiple Grammy awards, including, quite rightly, both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Kelli-Leigh – More than Friends with James Hype [Warner Music]
After racking up two number ones at this early point in her career, Kelli-Leigh had set the bar high going into 2017. ‘More than Friends’, released with producer James Hype, more than lived up to expectations. Once again, the vocalist delivers a stunning revision of a vocal line, putting her own stamp on an En Vogue classic.
The track reached number one on the UK Dance Chart, the top ten of the UK Singles Chart, and became a staple of the summer festival season. Kelli-Leigh followed ‘More than Friends’ with Roger Sanchez collaboration ‘Do It Well’, another fan favourite track. Once again, expectations are high for the New Year.
Inna – Ruleta feat. Erick [Global]
Along with ‘Despacito’, Inna’s ‘Ruleta’ proved that music can transcend the language barrier. With sections in both Spanish and English, the bilingual track was a huge success in Turkey, Lithuania, and Inna’s native Romania. The song’s video garnered 100,000,000 views in just three short months.
The singer’s YouTube channel has become one of the most popular in Europe. She has more subscribers than the likes of Rita Ora and Robbie Williams, and her regular ‘On the Road’ tour updates are extremely popular with her loyal fans.
Catchment – Kornastone [Eton Messy]
English DJ-production duo Catchment have been making waves on the underground scene since the start of their young career. The DJs had their biggest success so far with ‘Kornastone’. The track was highlighted by Eton Messy as part of their seasonal Autumn/Winter 2017 compilation, which featured music from other highly acclaimed DJs and producers.
Catchment’s previous single, ‘Wanna’, racked up over one million Spotify streams since its release. With the full support of Eton Messy behind it, ‘Kornastone’ should be just as big a hit.
Dappy – Spotlight [P H]
Dappy launched his long-awaited comeback in 2017 with the rapid-fire freestyle ‘Straight Facts’, but it was his second new single, ‘Spotlight’ that really announced his return. A sombre, subdued acoustic single, the song showcased Dappy’s singing and songwriting over his the boisterous rapping he’s well-known for.
Many fans were shocked by Dappy’s undeniable vocal skills, and the raw honesty of the lyrics, but the track was very well-received. The stage has been set for a large scale comeback in 2018.
Era Istrefi – No I Love Yous feat. French Montana [Ultra Records]
Albanian singer Era Istrefi is known as the European Rihanna for a reason. Her collaboration with French Montana was a huge hit, with millions of streams and broad radio airplay. ‘No I Love Yous’ was just the latest in a string of hit singles from the singer. Now, she is gearing up to release her debut studio album, which will know doubt leave as much of a mark.
ShaoDow – #DropKickMan feat. The HeavyTrackers [Independent Release]
One of the biggest viral hits of the year, ShaoDow’s ‘#DropKickMan’ displayed everything the London rapper has become known for in one track. The song is a freestyle over a beat by producers The HeavyTrackerz, and its viral status was cemented when it entered the Spotify Viral UK Viral Chart. ‘#DropKickMan’ came at a great time for ShaoDow. The rapper was recognised as the hardest working independent artist in the business at the AIM Awards this year, beating stiff competition.
Charlie Sloth – The Plug (Album) [Grimey Limey]
Charlie Sloth has spent years making a name for himself as one of the most important voices on the grime scene, with his 1Xtra radio show, and its Fire in the Booth segments in particular. His debut album as a solo artist undeniably delivered on its promise. A stellar roster of guest vocalists is present, including Lady Leshurr, Giggs, WSTRN, Ghetts and many more.
Estelle – Love Like Ours feat. Tarrus Riley [VP Records]
Estelle proved herself to be a master of multiple genres with her single ‘Love Like Ours’ this year. Collaborating with producer Supa Dups, the track is an instant reggae classic, acting as a prelude to Estelle’s upcoming album, which will be inspired by the music she grew up with as a child.
Third Party – HOPE (Album) [Release Records/Armada Music]
Third Party’s much-anticipated debut album HOPE met high expectations from fans upon release. Featuring the 2016 single ‘Veins’ and ten other tracks, the full-length release gave progressive house fans something to from start to finish throughout the rest of the year.
