Annie Mac

Annie Macmanus, known professionally as Annie Mac, was born on July 18, 1978, in Dublin, Ireland. She pursued her education at Wesley College in Dublin and later studied English literature at The Queen’s University of Belfast. Her career in radio began at BBC Radio 1, initially as a producer before her first program aired on July 29, 2004. Over her tenure at BBC Radio 1, she became a prominent figure in the broadcasting landscape, hosting significant shows such as BBC Switch and later ‘Radio 1’s Future Sounds’ which played newly released dance-pop, hip-hop, rock, and indie music. She also presented ‘Radio 1’s Dance Party’ on Friday nights.

Throughout her career, Annie Mac made notable appearances across various media platforms. She featured on BBC Two’s ‘The Culture Show’ offering her music insights and co-presented ‘Top of the Pops’ with Reggie Yates in June 2006 and Rufus Hound in July 2006. She also hosted ‘Annie Mac Presents’ on SiriusXM’s BPM in the United States starting in November 2014. A significant career milestone was taking over Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 evening show in February 2015, broadcasting Monday through Thursday. Additionally, she explored the impact of club closures in the 2017 BBC Three documentary ‘Who Killed the Night’. She resigned from BBC Radio 1 in July 2021 to dedicate more time to her family.

Beyond her broadcasting roles, Annie Mac has demonstrated her versatility as a curator and author. She launched her ‘AMP (Annie Mac Presents)’ brand, which included curating line-ups for DJ events and the Annie Mac Presents: Lost & Found Festival in Malta, an annual music festival that started in 2015. Her literary career began with her debut novel, ‘Mother Mother’, released in May 2021, which became a Sunday Times bestseller. She followed this with her second novel, ‘The Mess We’re In’, in May 2023. In September 2023, she launched the BBC Sounds podcast ‘Sidetracked with Annie and Nick’ alongside Nick Grimshaw.
