Plaid is an electronic music duo known for their innovative approach to electronic music through extensive discography, collaborations with prominent artists, and work in film scoring. After establishing themselves as Plaid in 1991, Andy Turner and Ed Handley quickly made their mark on electronic music with their debut material ‘Mbuki Mvuki’ released the same year. The duo swiftly cultivated a significant discography, contributing to the influential ‘Bytes’ compilation in 1993 and releasing early EPs such as ‘Android’ in 1995 and ‘Booc’ in 2000. Their distinct musical style, integrating electronica, dance, ambient, and experimental elements with diverse time-signatures, was showcased across albums like ‘Not for Threes’ (1997), ‘Rest Proof Clockwork’ (1999), ‘Trainer’ (2000), ‘Double Figure’ (2001), and ‘Spokes’ (2003).
Plaid released material on notable labels including Clear, Peacefrog, Black Dog Productions, and Warp Records, as well as Trent Reznor’s Nothing Records, solidifying their reputation for an innovative sound often described as ‘post-techno’. Beyond their prolific album output, Plaid embarked on diverse projects, collaborating with prominent vocalists including Mara Carlyle, Nicolette, and Björk. Their extensive remix work for artists such as Red Snapper, Goldfrapp, and The Irresistible Force was later compiled in ‘Parts in the Post’ (2003). Demonstrating their audiovisual artistry, Plaid completed the immersive ‘Greedy Baby’ project in 2005, a collaboration with video artist Bob Jaroc presented in a 5.1 audio/visual format.
The duo continues to evolve and release new material, approaching their 30th year with Warp Records and solidifying their enduring influence within the electronic music landscape.
