Aux 88

Aux 88, composed of Tommy Hamilton (Tom Tom) and William ‘BJ’ Smith (Posatronix), originated in Detroit, Michigan. The group’s foundations trace back to 1985 with the formation of ‘RX-7,’ which included Anthony Horton. Before establishing Aux 88 in 1993, the members also worked on another project called Sight Beyond Sight. Aux 88 quickly became recognized for their reinterpretation of Motor City Breakbeat Electro-funk, often referred to as Techno-Bass. Their debut album, “Bass Magnetic,” was released in 1993 through 430 West. This initial release set the stage for their electronic sound.

The group continued to expand their discography during the 1990s and 2000s with a series of acclaimed releases. Key albums and EPs from this period include “Is It Man or Machine?” (1996), “Xeo-Genetic” (1998), and their self-titled album “Aux 88” (2005). They also released “Mad Scientist” in 2009 and “Aux 88 Presents Black Tokyo” in 2010. Their contributions to the electronic music scene were formally recognized in 1999 when Aux 88 received two Detroit Music Awards for “Outstanding Electronic/Dance Artist/Group” and “Outstanding Electronic/Dance Recording” for “Play It Loud.” The year 2020 saw the release of their album “Counterparts,” and in 2022, they were honored with a Spirit of Detroit Award, further solidifying their legacy.

Throughout their career, Aux 88 has been noted for their commitment to the electro sound, influencing both Detroit techno and the global electronic music landscape. Tommy Hamilton and William Smith are currently the primary members, continuing to create new music and perform internationally. Their work includes cultivating new talent and maintaining a steady output of productions, contributing to the evolution of the genre they helped define. The group’s consistent presence and numerous releases underscore their enduring impact on electronic music.
