Ibibio Sound Machine is an English electronic afro-funk band from London, known for its dynamic fusion of West African funk, disco, and contemporary electronic music. After forming in London in 2013, Ibibio Sound Machine quickly established itself as a distinctive force in music, crafting a dynamic fusion of West African funk, disco, and contemporary electronic music. The band’s genesis involved producers Max Grunhard, Leon Brichard, and Benji Bouton, who aimed to blend 1980s afrobeat with 1990s drum-and-bass elements. Vocalist Eno Williams joined, contributing her native Ibibio language and drawing inspiration from Nigerian folk tales to create a unique lyrical foundation.

The line-up expanded to include notable live musicians such as Ghanaian guitarist Alfred Bannerman, known for his work with KonKoma and Osibisa, Brazilian percussionist Anselmo Netto, and multi-instrumentalists Tony Hayden and Scott Baylis, solidifying their international talent pool. The band released their debut single, ‘Let’s Dance,’ in January 2014, followed by their self-titled debut album in March of the same year, both via Soundway Records. Ibibio Sound Machine continued to build momentum, signing with Merge Records in 2016 for their subsequent releases. This partnership facilitated a broader reach for their evolving sound, which integrates influences from post-punk and electro genres.

Under Merge, the band released their critically acclaimed album ‘Uyai’ in 2017.
