Skrillex, also known as Sonny John Moore, is an American record producer, DJ, singer, songwriter, and musician known for his pioneering work in electronic music and extensive collaborations across various genres.
Skrillex has partnered with G-Star RAW. Other notable figures like Pharrell Williams have also endorsed G-Star RAW, a brand in consumer goods.
Skrillex launched his independent record label, OWSLA, in September 2011. The label's first releases included artists like KOAN Sound, Porter Robinson, Alvin Risk, and M Machine.
Moore partnered with Red Bull to produce a documentary titled 'Let's Make a Spaceship.' The documentary premiered at the ACL Festival in 2014.
Sonny John Moore, born on January 15, 1988, in Highland Park, Los Angeles, established a significant career in music under the professional name Skrillex. His early life involved moving between Los Angeles and Northern California, and he was homeschooled at age 14 due to bullying. Moore began his musical journey in 2004 as the lead vocalist for the post-hardcore band From First to Last, recording two studio albums, “Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count” (2004) and “Heroine” (2006). He toured extensively with the band, appearing on the cover of Alternative Press’s “100 Bands You Need to Know” issue in 2008. In 2007, he departed from the band to pursue a solo career.
From 2008, Moore started performing as Skrillex, releasing the “Gypsyhook” EP in 2009. He transitioned into electronic music, offering the “My Name Is Skrillex” EP as a free download in 2010. This was followed by “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” (late 2010) and “More Monsters and Sprites” (mid-2011). These EPs achieved commercial success, leading to five Grammy Award nominations in 2011 at the 54th Grammy Awards. He won three Grammys: “Best Dance/Electronica Album,” “Best Dance Recording,” and “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.” Skrillex was named MTV’s Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year in 2011 and holds the record for the most Grammys won by an Electronic Dance Music artist, with nine awards.
Throughout his career, Skrillex has engaged in numerous collaborations and projects. He formed the groups Jack Ü with Diplo and Dog Blood with Boys Noize. In 2014, he released his debut LP, “Recess.” He reunited with From First to Last in 2017 to release the single “Make War” and also produced and mixed Incubus’s eighth studio album, “8.” Recent releases in 2023 include “Quest for Fire” and “Don’t Get Too Close.” In 2024, he won his ninth Grammy for “Rumble,” a collaboration with Fred Again and Flowdan, and released “Taka” with Ahadadream and Priya Ragu. His fourth album, “Fuck U Skrillex You Think Ur Andy Warhol but Ur Not!! <3" was surprise released in 2025, and "Soma" was released in 2026.
