Mathame is comprised of Italian brothers Matteo and Amedeo Giovanelli. Their musical journey began in 2013 while residing at the base of Mount Etna, Sicily. During this period, they developed their distinct sound, drawing inspiration from diverse musical influences. Matteo, the elder brother, also pursued film studies, becoming a film director. Amedeo honed his musical skills through years of violin study, which, along with classical pieces and theatrical soundtracks, significantly influenced Mathame’s compositional style. The blend of their individual experiences contributed to their formation and sound.
The duo gained recognition for their emotive and cinematic melodic techno, characterized by a dark yet romantic pulse. Their early work quickly garnered support from prominent figures like Tale of Us and the Afterlife Records label. Breakthrough singles such as “Skywalking” and “Nothing Around Us” in 2018 and 2019 contributed to their rise, leading to a demanding tour schedule of 90 to 100 gigs annually. Mathame’s unique approach to electronic music led to the development of a signature sound that has been widely recognized within the industry.
In March 2020, Mathame released their single “Never Give Up” through B1 Recordings/Sony, which was awarded ‘The Essential New Tune’ by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong. This track later saw remixes from artists such as Diplo, Lost Frequencies, ZHU, Adriatique, and Vril. In 2023, Mathame released their debut album, “Memo,” via Astralwerks, a thirteen-track project that chronicled their experiences and emotions over a three-year period, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The album’s narrative structure, influenced by science fiction and Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, reflects themes of darkness, light, and love. Mathame employs AI programming in their show visuals and some artwork, and their live Audio Visual (AV) shows have been featured at major festivals worldwide, including Coachella, Ultra Miami Resistance, and Tomorrowland.
