Rui Da Silva

Born on April 25, 1968, Rui Da Silva began producing house music in 1992, at a time when club culture was taking root in Lisbon. Recognizing a scarcity of dance music labels in Portugal, he co-founded Kaos Records with DJ Vibe. This label became the first in Portugal to specialize in house and electronic music, releasing a variety of tracks that helped establish the local scene. His early work under the alias Doctor J included the track “Não” in 1993. In 1993, he also formed the Underground Sound of Lisbon project with DJ Vibe. Their track “So Get Up” (1994), featuring Ithaka Darin Pappas, gained international attention after being picked up by Tribal America and supported by Danny Tenaglia, who also remixed the track.

In 1999, Da Silva relocated to London, shifting his focus from production to DJing and developing his solo career. He established Kismet Records in 2000, cultivating a more progressive sound. This period marked a significant turning point, leading to the release of his single “Touch Me” featuring Cassandra Fox in 2000. “Touch Me” achieved widespread success, topping the Portuguese Singles Chart and becoming the first progressive house song to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart. It was also the first song by a Portuguese artist to top the UK chart and the first new UK chart-topper of the 21st century. His work with Kismet Records has earned recognition from prominent DJs like Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, and John Digweed.

Throughout his career, Da Silva has maintained a prolific output, releasing albums such as “Produced & Remixed” (2002) and “Praying Mantis” (2006). His discography includes numerous singles under his own name and various aliases, including Doctor J, The Four Elements, Coco da Silva (with Chris Coco), and Underground Sound of Lisbon. As a remixer, he has contributed to tracks by artists like Jennifer Lopez (“Play”), Lighthouse Family (“Happy”), and Yoko Ono (“Walking on Thin Ice”). His consistent artistic evolution and ability to connect with global audiences have solidified his position in the electronic music landscape.
