Ethan Snoreck, known professionally as Whethan, was born on May 25, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois. His musical journey began informally, experimenting with Garage Band on his iPad and rapping with a friend in his early middle school years. He was influenced by well-known electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Skrillex, and Deadmau5. He initially released house music under his birth name and briefly used “Wheathin,” a name derived from a remix of a Wheat Thins jingle he created. In 2016, following a request from the snack brand, he changed his stage name to Whethan. At 16, he achieved early recognition as the youngest producer to release a record on the Australian EDM label Future Classic, which subsequently drew the attention of dubstep artist Skrillex.
Whethan’s career progressed quickly, marked by his distinct blend of indie future synths and electropop, drawing inspiration from Flume. He frequently collaborated with artist Oliver Tree, releasing several singles such as “All You Ever Talk About” (2017), “When I’m Down” (2016), “Enemy” (2017), and “Freefall” (2020). Other notable collaborations include “Can’t Hide” (2016) with Ashe, which topped Billboard’s Spotify Viral 50 chart, and “Savage” (2016) featuring Flux Pavilion and MAX. In 2017, he toured with The Chainsmokers, leaving high school early to do so, though he returned for his graduation. A significant milestone occurred in 2018 when he collaborated with pop singer Dua Lipa on “High,” featured in the film “Fifty Shades Freed.” That same year, he released the single “Be Like You” with Broods and his EP “Life of a Wallflower Vol. 1”.
His debut album, “Fantasy,” was released in 2020, followed by “Midnight” in 2022. The album “Midnight” included the single “Lock It Up” (2022) featuring Yeat, Midwxst, and Matt Ox, which charted on the US Dance/Electronic Songs. Whethan has performed at prominent music festivals such as SXSW and BUKU Music + Art Project. He also collaborated on “High” with The Chainsmokers in 2022, further cementing his presence in the electronic music scene. His work is released under labels including Atlantic, Big Beat, and his own Wallflower Records.
