American Football released their self-titled debut album in 1999 through Polyvinyl Records, an LP that quickly earned significant critical acclaim and developed a strong cult following, establishing itself as a cornerstone record in the emo and math rock scenes. The band, formed in 1997, originally consisted of guitarist, bassist, and singer Mike Kinsella, guitarist Steve Holmes, and drummer and trumpet player Steve Lamos. Prior to forming American Football, Kinsella was involved with influential acts such as Cap’n Jazz and Joan of Arc, while Lamos had played with The One Up Downstairs. Kinsella and Lamos collaborated under ‘The One Up Downstairs’ in 1997 before officially teaming with Holmes to establish American Football.
In 2021, Steve Lamos temporarily departed the band due to life changes, but ultimately rejoined in 2023, solidifying the classic lineup once again. A notable milestone occurred in May 2023 when American Football, in a joint venture with Polyvinyl Records, purchased the iconic ‘American Football House’ featured on their debut album cover, ensuring its preservation for fans and cultural posterity. Over two decades, American Football has been consistently recognized for its pioneering blend of emo and math rock elements, characterized by intricate guitar work, complex time signatures, and introspective lyrics. Their considerable influence on subsequent emo and indie rock bands continues to be felt across the music industry.
