Broken Bells is an acclaimed American indie rock band formed by the talented duo of Brian Burton, known as Danger Mouse, and James Mercer, the lead vocalist and guitarist of The Shins. Their collaboration began in 2004 after they discovered a mutual admiration for each other’s work at the Roskilde Festival. By 2008, they were secretly recording together, culminating in the release of their self-titled debut album in March 2010. The album was met with critical acclaim, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 400,000 copies in the U.S., showcasing their unique blend of melodic and experimental sounds.
Following their successful debut, Broken Bells continued to evolve their sound with the release of the EP Meyrin Fields in 2011 and their sophomore album, After the Disco, in 2014. The lead single from the latter, “Holding on for Life,” further solidified their presence in the indie music scene. Their performances, including a memorable cover of “And I Love Her” on The Late Show with David Letterman, highlighted their versatility and ability to connect with audiences.
After a brief hiatus, Broken Bells returned in 2022 with their third studio album, Into the Blue. The lead single, “We’re Not in Orbit Yet…”, marked a triumphant comeback, followed by additional singles that showcased their continued innovation and relevance in the music industry. Their ability to blend genres and create captivating melodies has earned them a dedicated fanbase and critical recognition.
Throughout their career, Broken Bells have not only produced chart-topping music but have also been recognized with nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album in 2011. With their dynamic performances and creative collaborations, Broken Bells remains a significant force in the indie rock landscape, continually pushing the boundaries of their artistry.
