Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, known professionally as CMAT, was born on February 23, 1996, in Dublin, Ireland. She spent her childhood in Clonee and Dunboyne, County Meath, before returning to Dublin to study at Trinity College. Early in her career, she moved to Manchester, England, to pursue music with her then-boyfriend, performing as Bad Sea. After relocating back to Dublin, she began self-releasing music online, gaining significant attention and radio play from RTÉ Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music. These early efforts established her unique artistic voice, characterized by emotional depth, clever crafting, and a distinct sense of humor.
CMAT’s debut studio album, “If My Wife New I’d Be Dead,” was released in February 2022. The album received widespread acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 85 and being described by Hot Press magazine as “undoubtedly one of the most thrilling Irish pop debuts of the century.” It debuted at number one on the Irish Albums Chart and later won the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year in March 2023. She released the single “Peter Bogdanovich” in June 2022, accompanied by a music video featuring her dressed as the director. Her second album, “Crazymad, for Me,” followed in October 2023, also debuting at number one on the Irish Albums Chart and nominated for an Ivor Novello Award for Best Album.
Her third studio album, “Euro-Country,” released in August 2025, continued her success by again topping the Irish Albums Chart and reaching number two in the UK. The album’s themes touched on societal issues, including the repercussions of the 2008 Irish economic downturn. CMAT’s career has also seen her perform on major stages, including the Pyramid stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2025, where her performance received positive reviews. She is known for her strong fanbase within the LGBTQ+ community and has engaged in political activism, notably pulling out of Latitude Festival in May 2024 due to its sponsorship by Barclays and the company’s financial involvement in the Gaza war, and making a statement in support of Palestinians at Glastonbury.
