Eric Whitney, known professionally as Ghostemane, was born on April 15, 1991, in Lake Worth, Florida, and grew up in West Palm Beach. His early musical interests were in hardcore punk and doom metal, playing guitar and drums in bands such as Nemesis and Seven Serpents during his teenage years. Whitney’s father passed away when he was seventeen, an event he mentions influenced his perspectives. He was introduced to rap music by a bandmate during his time with Nemesis, sparking an interest in Memphis rap that would later heavily inform his unique musical style.
Prior to his full-time music career, Whitney held various B2B sales positions. In 2015, seeking more opportunities in music, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, and committed to a career as a rapper under the moniker Ill Bizz. Shortly after moving, he joined the hip hop collective Schemaposse alongside artists like Craig Xen and Lil Peep. His career saw a significant turning point in April 2016 when he departed from Schemaposse, subsequently releasing the self-produced album “Blackmage” and his first cinematic music video for the single “John Dee.” His collaboration with Pouya on the track “1000 Rounds” in April 2017 further boosted his visibility, with the accompanying video quickly gaining millions of views.
Ghostemane’s rise in the music scene accelerated with the viral success of the 1930s cartoon edit music video for his song “Mercury: Retrograde” in late 2017, created by the art collective TRASH GANG. This video has accumulated over 500 million views, becoming his most recognized single. In 2018, he released his seventh studio album, “N/O/I/S/E,” an anticipated work within the underground music community, showcasing influences from industrial metal, nu metal, and bands like Nine Inch Nails. By 2020, he diversified his artistic endeavors by unveiling Baader-Meinhof, a lo-fi black metal project, demonstrating his continuous exploration of different genres. In 2021, his music video “AI,” directed by Nick Cinelli, received a nomination for Most Bizarre at the Berlin Music Video Awards, highlighting his innovative approach to visual arts.
