Heavy metal band GWAR earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Long Form Music Video for their 1993 film Phallus in Wonderland, solidifying their distinctive presence through grotesque costumes and science fiction-themed mythology. The band released their debut album, Hell-O, in 1988, followed by Scumdogs of the Universe in 1990, which garnered mainstream success and initiated a partnership with Metal Blade Records. GWAR became renowned for their elaborate stage shows, featuring graphic violence and spraying audiences with fake blood, cultivating notoriety and a dedicated cult following. Their unique theatricality led to regular airplay on MTV and guest appearances on various talk shows.
GWAR’s career continued to evolve with a consistent output of albums in the 1990s, including America Must Be Destroyed (1992), This Toilet Earth (1994), Ragnarok (1995), Carnival of Chaos (1997), and We Kill Everything (1999). The band also made a cameo appearance in the 1995 film Empire Records. Entering the 2000s, GWAR released Violence Has Arrived in 2001 and shifted label affiliation, signing with DRT Entertainment in 2004 for albums such as War Party (2004) and Beyond Hell (2006). They re-signed with Metal Blade in 2009, subsequently releasing Lust in Space and Bloody Pit of Horror in 2010, further cementing their unique blend of music and performance art.
Expanding their performance repertoire, GWAR delivered a notable NPR Tiny Desk Concert in 2023. Looking ahead to 2025, GWAR will release the new single ‘Lot Lizard’ and ‘The Return Of Gor Gor’ EP/comic book, concurrently with an exhibition of their props and costumes opening at the Beyond the Streets Gallery in Los Angeles.
