Steven Adam Markowitz, known professionally as Hoodie Allen, was born on August 19, 1988, in Plainview, New York. His early life on Long Island included writing lyrics as a child and performing raps at house parties. Markowitz attended the Long Island School for the Gifted and later Plainview – Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. He pursued higher education at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2010 with a degree in marketing and finance. Post-graduation, he joined Google as an AdWords associate. Despite a demanding schedule, he dedicated his evenings to music, a passion that ultimately led him to leave Google to fully commit to his artistic career. His early musical efforts, including the duo with Obey City, earned him recognition even before his full-time pivot to music.
Allen’s career as an independent artist is marked by consistent releases and chart successes. In 2010, after the release of “You Are Not a Robot,” which sampled Marina and the Diamonds and topped Hype Machine, he gained significant traction. This led to his mixtape ‘Pep Rally’ being downloaded over 200,000 times. His 2011 mixtape ‘Leap Year’ garnered 250,000 SoundCloud plays within its first week and was supported by a 15-city North American tour. His debut EP, ‘All American’ (2012), was a notable achievement, reaching number 1 on iTunes and number 10 on the Billboard 200. This EP marked a shift to original productions, moving away from sampled beats and showcasing his evolving artistry. He extensively toured in support of these releases, solidifying his fanbase.
Subsequent years saw Hoodie Allen releasing further projects and engaging in various collaborations and tours. His debut studio album, ‘People Keep Talking’ (2014), peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200 and featured the single “All About It” with Ed Sheeran, marking his sole entry on the Billboard Hot 100. He supported this album with a comprehensive world tour across the US, Europe, Canada, and Australia. He also joined the Boys of Zummer Tour with Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa in 2015. His independent spirit continued with subsequent albums like ‘Happy Camper’ (2016), ‘The Hype’ (2017), ‘Whatever USA’ (2019), and ‘bub’ (2023), consistently maintaining a presence in the hip-hop scene and engaging with his audience.
