About

Keith Lionel Urbahn, born on October 26, 1967, in Whangārei, New Zealand, moved to Caboolture, Queensland, Australia at two years old. His early interest in music led him to learn the ukulele at four and guitar at six. Influenced by his parents’ country music tastes, he entered local competitions and performed in community theater. In 1980, Urban appeared on the Australian TV talent show New Faces. He began making progress in the Australian country music scene with regular TV appearances and formed the band Kids Country. He won a Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, performing duets with Jenny Wilson during this period.

In 1990, Urban signed with EMI in Australia, releasing his self-titled debut album and charting four singles there. He toured as a backup act for Slim Dusty from 1993 to 1994 and sang backing vocals on INXS’s 1991 single “Shining Star.” Moving to Nashville in 1992, he formed The Ranch in 1995, releasing a self-titled album with Capitol Records Nashville in 1997. His American solo debut album, also self-titled, was released in 1999 and became platinum-certified, yielding his first number one hit, “But for the Grace of God.” This success led to him winning the Top New Male Vocalist Award at the 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards and the 2001 Country Music Association’s Horizon Award.

Urban continued his musical output with “Golden Road” in 2002, featuring the six-week number one hit “Somebody Like You.” He received his first Grammy Award in 2005 for “You’ll Think of Me.” Subsequent albums like “Be Here” (2004) and “Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing” (2006) produced multiple number one singles and earned him a second Grammy Award for “Stupid Boy.” Beyond his music, Urban contributed to the film “Act of Valor” with the song “For You,” earning Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations. He also served as a coach on “The Voice Australia” and a judge on “American Idol,” solidifying his presence in popular culture.
