Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., professionally known as Lil Wayne, was born on September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His early life in the Hollygrove neighborhood led him to music at a young age, writing his first rap song at eight. At eleven, he was discovered by Bryan “Birdman” Williams and signed with Cash Money Records. He formed the duo B.G.’z in 1994, releasing the album *True Story*. In 1997, he co-founded the Southern hip-hop group Hot Boys with Juvenile and Turk. The group gained significant recognition with their second album, *Guerrilla Warfare* (1999), and their appearance on B.G.’s single “Bling Bling.” Carter also featured on Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up,” which charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lil Wayne’s solo career began with his debut album, *Tha Block Is Hot* (1999), achieving commercial success and RIAA platinum certification. Subsequent albums, *Lights Out* (2000) and *500 Degreez* (2002), further established his solo presence. His 2004 album, *Tha Carter*, marked a notable evolution in his style, followed by *Tha Carter II* in 2005, despite producer Mannie Fresh’s departure from the label. In 2005, he founded Young Money Entertainment as an imprint, later signing artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj. His dedication to mixtapes, particularly *Dedication 2* (2006) and *Da Drought 3* (2007), expanded his artistic reach. His collaborations became prominent throughout 2006 and 2007, culminating in multiple top 20 singles on various Billboard charts.
His sixth studio album, *Tha Carter III* (2008), achieved over one million first-week sales domestically, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The album featured the number-one single “Lollipop.” Following a prison sentence in 2010, he released *I Am Not a Human Being*, which became a number-one album. *Tha Carter IV* (2011) also debuted at number one, selling 964,000 units in its first week. He continued to release successful projects such as *I Am Not a Human Being II* (2013), *Free Weezy Album* (2015), and *Tha Carter V* (2018), which debuted at number one after significant delays. His recent works include *Funeral* (2020) and the collaborative album *Welcome 2 Collegrove* (2023) with 2 Chainz. His upcoming album, *Tha Carter VI*, is scheduled for release in June 2025. Lil Wayne has sold over 120 million records worldwide and holds multiple Grammy, BET, Billboard, MTV, and NAACP Image Awards.
