Mafikizolo have a huge international fan base and have performed in all corners of South Africa and beyond, their music highlighting important social issues and taking influence from traditional kwela, marabi and kwaito sounds. Their biggest hits include ‘Ndihamba Nawe’, one of the biggest African songs of the 21st century, and 2017’s Love Potion, a track that has been viewed over 18 million times on YouTube.
Formed in 1997 as a kwaito group, Mafikozolo released their debut album Music Revolution in 1999, followed by Gate Crushers in 2000, a huge success which produced hit singles Looto and Majika.
2002’s Sibongile earned widespread critical acclaim and gave the band a huge hit with the irresistible track ‘Ndihamba Nawe’, a song that remains globally popular to this day. After more successful releases and tours, the band took a well-earned hiatus before exploding back on the music scene with ‘Khona’ featuring Uhuru.
The song received critical acclaim for its addictive, syncopated sound, and has been credited with popularising the genre of South African house music. Hitting the top spot on the South African charts, the track was included in the Top 10 African songs of 2013. Their album Reunited was released the same year and earned the pair an incredible 12 South African Music Awards.
In 2017, the band released the LP 20, celebrating two successful decades in the music industry. Proving they still had a golden touch for producing irresistible hit music, hit single ‘Love Potion’ amassed over 18 million YouTube views and further cemented their popularity across the globe.
