Michael James Hucknall was born on June 8, 1960, in Manchester, England. His early life was marked by his mother’s departure when he was three, an event that later inspired one of Simply Red’s most significant hits, “Holding Back the Years.” He was raised by his father, Reginald, a barber in Stockport. Hucknall pursued his education at Audenshaw School, followed by Tameside College and Manchester Polytechnic’s School of Art, where he studied fine art. His interest in music was sparked by attending a Sex Pistols performance in 1976.
Hucknall’s music career began in the late 1970s with the band Frantic Elevators, which released four singles, including an early version of “Holding Back the Years.” In 1985, he founded Simply Red, becoming its lead singer and primary songwriter. The band achieved international fame, selling over 50 million albums across a 25-year career. Simply Red’s distinctive sound, influenced by soul, pop, and R&B, resonated with a global audience. Hucknall released his first solo album, “Tribute to Bobby,” in 2008, paying homage to blues musician Bobby “Blue” Bland. In 2012, he released “American Soul,” a collection of his favorite music re-recorded with his vocals.
Throughout his career, Hucknall has received recognition for his musical contributions, including an Outstanding Achievement award from the MOBO Awards in 1997 and a BASCA Gold Badge award in 2011. Beyond music, Hucknall has engaged in business ventures, co-owning Ask Property Development and producing wines under the “Il Cantante” label in Sicily.
