Rooney is a dynamic musical project led by singer-songwriter Robert Schwartzman, originally formed as an American rock band in Los Angeles in 1999. The band, initially known as Ed Rooney, quickly gained traction with their engaging sound reminiscent of Jellyfish and Sloan. Their early years were marked by the release of independent EPs, including ‘Deli Meats’ and ‘Plug It In,’ which helped them build a dedicated following through numerous live performances across Los Angeles and Anaheim.
In 2003, Rooney signed with Geffen/Interscope Records, marking a significant milestone in their career. Their debut album, released in May 2003, featured the hit single ‘Blueside,’ which received extensive airplay on alternative radio and was included in the video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. The band’s appearance on the popular TV show The O.C. further propelled their music into the mainstream, showcasing their songs and solidifying their presence in the music industry.
Following their debut, Rooney continued to evolve, releasing their second album, ‘Calling the World,’ in 2007, which debuted at #42 on The Billboard Top 100 Albums chart. The single ‘When Did Your Heart Go Missing?’ gained popularity through various media, including commercials and television shows, demonstrating the band’s ability to connect with a broad audience.
After a brief hiatus, Schwartzman revitalized Rooney in 2016 with a new lineup and the release of the album ‘Washed Away.’ This album showcased Schwartzman’s versatility as he performed most instruments himself, alongside talented session musicians. Rooney’s ongoing commitment to creating engaging music and their ability to adapt to changing musical landscapes highlight their enduring appeal and artistic growth.
