Aaron Tveit was born on October 21, 1983, in Middletown, New York, as Aaron Kyle Tveit. He began his professional acting career in 2003, joining the national tour of “Rent” while still attending Ithaca College. He later transitioned to the national tour of “Hairspray” and made his Broadway debut in the same role in 2006. His early career also included regional theatre productions such as “Calvin Berger” in 2007 and “The Three Musketeers” that same year. Tveit’s film debut was in “Ghost Town” in 2008.
Tveit gained prominence for originating the role of Gabe in the Off-Broadway production of “Next to Normal” in 2007, earning a Lucille Lortel Award nomination. He subsequently took over the role of Fiyero in “Wicked” on Broadway in 2008. In 2009, he returned to “Next to Normal” for its Broadway run, which led to a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Supporting Performer. He also originated the role of Frank Abagnale Jr. in the musical “Catch Me If You Can,” which premiered in Seattle in 2009 and later moved to Broadway in 2011, earning him nominations for the Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League Award, and Fred Astaire Award. During this period, Tveit also appeared on television, with recurring roles as Tripp van der Bilt on “Gossip Girl” and guest appearances on “Ugly Betty” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” His film work included “Howl” in 2010.
His career further expanded with significant screen and stage roles. In 2012, Tveit played Enjolras in the film adaptation of “Les Misérables.” From 2013 to 2015, he starred as Agent Mike Warren in the USA Network series “Graceland.” Tveit made his London stage debut in “Assassins” in 2014 and portrayed Danny Zuko in Fox’s “Grease Live!” in 2016. He later starred in the CBS series “BrainDead” in 2016. Most recently, Tveit originated the lead role of Christian in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” on Broadway, earning a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2020. He has also appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon!” (2021-2023) and returned to Broadway as Sweeney Todd in 2024, with an upcoming role in the Broadway revival of “Chess” in 2025.
