Aidan Gomez, a British-Canadian computer scientist, grew up in Brighton, Ontario. He pursued his education at the University of Toronto, earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics, and later undertook a PhD in computer science from the University of Oxford. During his time at Google Brain as a 20-year-old intern in 2017, Gomez was a co-author of the seminal research paper “Attention Is All You Need.” This paper introduced the Transformer neural network architecture, which significantly influenced the AI industry and played a role in the development of technologies like ChatGPT. He also contributed to the paper “One Model to Learn Them All,” focusing on multi-task learning using a single neural network.
In 2019, Aidan Gomez paused his PhD studies to co-found Cohere, an enterprise-focused artificial intelligence company specializing in implementing AI for chatbots, search engines, and various other products. He serves as the CEO of Cohere, which was valued at $5.5 billion as of July 2024. In April 2025, Gomez was elected to the board of Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, further expanding his involvement in technology-driven industries. Cohere For AI, an offshoot of his earlier initiative FOR.ai, continues his efforts to support researchers in collaborative machine learning techniques.
His contributions to the field of AI have been recognized widely. In 2023, he was included in the Time 100/AI list, identifying him as one of the most influential individuals in artificial intelligence. Additionally, he, along with Cohere co-founders Ivan Zhang and Nick Frosst, topped Maclean’s AI Trailblazers Power List in 2023.
