Annise Parker, the only individual in Houstons history to hold the offices of city council member, controller, and mayor, built a distinguished career spanning two decades in the private sector before dedicating herself to public service. After graduating from Rice University in 1978, she spent 18 years as a software analyst with Mosbacher Energy Company within the oil and gas industry and also co-owned Inklings Bookshop for ten years from 1989 to 1999. Parkers public service began with local community involvement as President of the Neartown Civic Association from 1995 to 1997. She was first elected to public office in 1997 as an At-Large member of the Houston City Council, serving until 2003, with re-elections in 1999 and 2001.
Under her leadership, Houston was selected as City of the Year by Fast Company magazine in 2011, the same year she received the Guardian of the Bay Award from the Galveston Bay Foundation. Post-mayoral service, Parker transitioned to the non-profit sector, serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for BakerRipley from 2016 onward. Since December 2017, Parker has served as the CEO and President of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund and Leadership Institute, a role she will continue until March 2025, leading efforts to increase LGBTQ+ representation in government. In addition to her executive leadership, she contributes her extensive experience to academia, serving as a Professor at the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, where she mentors future leaders in civic and organizational leadership.
