Albert Lee Toon Jr., born on April 30, 1963, in Newport News, Virginia, established a notable career first in athletics and later in business. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1981 to 1984, where he excelled in both football and track and field. During his collegiate football career, he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1983 and 1984, setting school records for receptions (131), receiving yards (2,103), and touchdown catches (19). He also demonstrated his multi-sport talent by winning three Big Ten triple jump titles and becoming an All-American in the triple jump, while also qualifying for the Olympic Trials in both the 110 High Hurdles and the Triple Jump in 1983. His prowess led to him being named Wisconsin’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1984.
Toon was selected by the New York Jets in the first round (10th overall) of the 1985 NFL draft. His NFL career, spanning eight seasons from 1985 to 1992, saw him lead the Jets in receptions for six consecutive years. He recorded a breakout season in 1986 with 85 receptions for 1,176 yards and eight touchdowns, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections. In 1988, he led the NFL with 93 receptions for 1,067 yards and five touchdowns, receiving another Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition. Throughout his career, he amassed 517 receptions for 6,605 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns. Toon retired in November 1992 after suffering multiple concussions, being advised by doctors due to his nine career concussions, with five occurring in his last six seasons. He was later inducted into the New York Jets Ring of Honor in 2011.
Following his retirement from professional football, Toon embarked on a diverse and successful business career. In 1995, he was a founding member of Capitol Bank, serving on its board of directors. He further developed the AT8 Companies to manage his commercial real estate portfolio and became a franchisee for both Taco Bell and Hilton Garden Inn. Additionally, he has been an investor in Wisconsin Burger King Franchise companies since 1992. His community involvement extended to serving on the board of directors for National Guardian Life Insurance Company (NGL) and the Green Bay Packers. He also became an owner of Olson Toon Landscaping, Inc., a significant multifaceted design/build landscape company in the Midwest, and contributed to the development of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Dane County as a board member.
