Ireland AJ MacGinty has transitioned from a developing talent in Irish rugby to a key international fly-half for the United States, showcasing consistent performance across club and national stages.
Alan “AJ” MacGinty, born on February 26, 1990, in Dublin, Ireland, began his rugby journey at the age of eight, also playing soccer during his youth. He attended Blackrock College in Ireland and later moved to the United States. In the U.S., he pursued a master’s degree in Sport Health Science at Life University, where he also played rugby for the Life Running Eagles. His performance there attracted the attention of USA Rugby High Performance, which led to his international debut.
MacGinty made his debut for the USA Eagles in July 2015 against Samoa. The same year, he participated in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Following his World Cup appearance, he signed with Connacht for the 2015–16 Pro12 season, playing a role in their first-ever silverware win. In 2016, he joined the English Premiership side Sale Sharks, where he remained until 2022. During his time with Sale Sharks, he was recognized as one of the better fly-halves in the game.
He was also named to the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad in Japan and assumed the role of captain for the U.S. national team in 2021. In November 2021, it was announced that MacGinty would be joining Bristol Bears at the end of the 2021-2022 season, continuing his career in the Premiership Rugby. Throughout his career, MacGinty has consistently been a significant contributor to his teams, particularly in his role as a fly-half and a leading point-scorer.
