Alexandra Turnbull is a Registered Dietitian and the founder of The Family Nutritionist, a platform dedicated to supporting parents with infant and child nutrition. Early in her career, after a brief six-month stint in long-term care, she found her niche in school food service in Minnesota. In this role, she focused on improving meal programs and encouraging students to try new foods. This experience provided a foundational understanding of practical nutrition challenges within families and motivated her desire for greater impact and autonomy in her work.
While working full-time, Alexandra began her family. This period coincided with the initiation of her Instagram account, originally named ‘realistic.dietitian.mommy’ and later ‘thefamilynutritionist.’ She documented her daughter’s baby-led weaning journey, which quickly gained traction and generated numerous inquiries from fellow parents regarding infant feeding and mealtime strategies. This organic community growth led to her first brand collaboration, revealing the potential for a career beyond traditional dietetics. For five years, she managed her full-time job while building her social media presence during evenings and nap times, developing content and expanding her brand.
Eventually, Alexandra made the decision to leave her stable position in school food service to pursue her entrepreneurial vision full-time. This transition was driven by a desire for increased flexibility and a broader impact, allowing her to focus entirely on The Family Nutritionist. Through this platform, she works to simplify child nutrition, offering realistic and evidence-based strategies to address picky eating and foster a positive food environment for families. She advocates for an approach of “nutrition by addition, not restriction,” and collaborates with brands that align with her mission to empower parents.
