Alexis Ohanian Sr. was born on April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York City. His early life involved moving to a Maryland suburb, and he maintained ties to his Armenian heritage through summer camps, as his paternal grandparents were refugees of the Armenian Genocide. Growing up, Ohanian developed an intense interest in technology, teaching himself coding and website development by making sites for non-profit organizations. Despite initially considering a career in law, a pivotal moment at a Waffle House led him to pursue entrepreneurship.
After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2005 with degrees in commerce and history, Ohanian, alongside his college roommate Steve Huffman, pitched their initial idea, MyMobileMenu, to Y Combinator. Though this concept was not funded, their subsequent idea, reddit.com, an online bulletin board aiming to be the ‘front page of the Internet,’ was accepted into Y Combinator’s first batch of startups in 2005. Reddit was later acquired by Condé Nast in 2006 for an estimated $10 million to $20 million. Ohanian remained involved with Reddit, serving on its board and returning full-time in 2015 to lead the now-independent company with Huffman. He eventually stepped down from his executive role in 2018 to focus on investing and resigned from Reddit’s board in 2020, advocating for diversity.
Beyond Reddit, Ohanian has been instrumental in several other ventures. In 2007, he launched Breadpig, a company selling geeky merchandise with proceeds benefiting charity. He also co-founded the travel search website Hipmunk in 2010 and established Das Kapital Capital for startup investing, advising, and consulting within the same year. He served as a partner at Y Combinator before co-founding Initialized Capital in 2010, an early-stage venture capital firm that managed over $500 million. In 2020, he founded his new venture capital firm, 776, dedicated to supporting innovative startups and addressing global challenges like climate change through initiatives like the 776 Foundation Fellowship. His influence extends to sports, notably as a lead investor in Angel City FC, a professional women’s soccer team in the NWSL, and through a 2025 investment in Chelsea Women FC. Ohanian is also a vocal advocate for parental leave and open internet activism.
