About

Born Siddiq Nasir Abdullah Ali on October 17, 1973, in Houston, Texas, Ali Siddiq’s early life included attending Jane Long and Paul Revere middle schools. Following his parents’ separation, he was raised by his mother, living at times in public housing projects and with other family members. At age 10, he experienced a near-fatal car accident, and his maternal half-sister, Ashley, passed away when he was 18. Siddiq’s formative years included selling illicit drugs beginning at age 14. He attended Texas Southern University but was arrested for cocaine trafficking shortly after his 19th birthday. He served six years of a 15-year sentence across several Texas correctional facilities, including Darrington Unit, Torres Unit, Bill Clements Unit, and Ellis Unit. During his incarceration, Siddiq discovered his talent for making people laugh by sharing jokes with fellow inmates. He was released from prison on October 21, 1997, at age 25. After his release, he worked at Sharpstown Mall, initially at a department store and then at Sunglass Hut, before pursuing a career in comedy.

Siddiq debuted his stand-up comedy at Houston’s Just Joking comedy club in December 1997 at an open mic night. Initially booed, he adapted his stage presence and was hired as a co-host by February 1998. He toured with comedian Lavell Crawford and performed on BET’s “Comic View” multiple times between 2000 and 2009. His performance on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” series finale in March 2008 marked a turning point, influenced by advice to focus on mainstream venues. In 2010, he self-released his debut comedy album, “Talking Loud Saying Something,” beginning his transition to a storytelling style. He released two more albums, “Freedom of Speech” and “Enjoy Your Life,” in 2013. That same year, Siddiq won Comedy Central’s inaugural “Up Next” stand-up comedy competition, performing at the New York Comedy Festival’s “Comics to Watch” showcase. His 2015 appearance on Comedy Central’s “This Is Not Happening,” featuring his “Mexican got on boots!” story about a prison riot, garnered over 15 million views on YouTube, solidifying his reputation for vivid storytelling. He continued to gain recognition with his half-hour special “The Half Hour” and his hour-long special “It’s Bigger Than These Bars,” filmed at the Bell County Jail in Texas, both released on Comedy Central. In 2019, he was a finalist on NBC’s “Bring the Funny” and released his album “The Prison Manual.” From 2021 to 2024, Siddiq co-hosted the “Uncle Funky Larry Jones & Ali Siddiq” radio show on KMJQ (Majic 102.1) in Houston. He has released multiple specials, including “Domino Effect” (2022), “Domino Effect 2: Loss” (2023), “Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover” (2023), and the “Domino Effect” series (2024), with “Domino Effect 3” and “Domino Effect 4” being shortlisted for a Primetime Emmy Award.
