Amanda Nguyen is a prominent social entrepreneur and civil rights activist, best known as the CEO and founder of Rise, a non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of sexual assault and rape survivors. Under her leadership, Rise has become a powerful force for legislative reform, successfully passing 42 laws that secure equal protection under the law for millions of survivors across the United States. Nguyen’s vision is to implement a Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights through a UN resolution, aiming for its adoption in all 50 states and at the national level.
Nguyen’s journey began after her own experience as a survivor of sexual assault while attending Harvard University. This personal trauma motivated her to advocate for change, leading to the drafting of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act, which passed unanimously through Congress in 2016. Her efforts have not only raised awareness but have also inspired a nationwide movement to reform the legal protections for survivors, ensuring their rights are upheld and their voices heard.
In addition to her legislative achievements, Nguyen has been recognized for her impactful work, receiving numerous accolades including a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 and being named one of Time’s Women of the Year in 2022. She has also been featured in the anthology “We Are Here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Have Shaped the United States,” highlighting her influence and contributions to civil rights.
Looking to the future, Nguyen’s aspirations extend beyond advocacy; she has been selected as a scientist astronaut candidate and is set to become the first Vietnamese woman to fly to space with Blue Origin in 2024. Her journey exemplifies resilience and dedication, as she continues to fight for justice and inspire others to rise and make a difference in the world.
