Tara Whiteman, known online as Tara Milk Tea, began her journey as a content creator in 2014 by sharing photos of meals from Sydney cafes on Instagram. A design student at the time, she initially pursued this as a hobby, focusing on flat-lays and styling. Her early content also featured her consuming bubble tea, which inspired her online name. Over two years, her focus shifted from food to travel, a personal interest. Whiteman’s mother is originally from Singapore, and her father worked as a marine pilot before they immigrated to Sydney.
As her online presence grew, brands began to approach Whiteman for paid partnerships. She expanded her network by connecting with other social media influencers, which helped her gain a better understanding of the business and creative aspects of the industry. Her career progressed to include collaborations with luxury brands such as Dior, Dior Beauty, and Piaget, for whom she serves as a brand ambassador in Australia. She has also worked with various airlines, facilitating travel to approximately 40 countries. In 2019, Whiteman was recognized on the Instagram ‘Rich List’, placing 17th globally and being the only Australian on the list, with reported earnings of $1.1 million and an estimated $15,000 per sponsored post.
Whiteman operates with her partner, Damien, who assists with photography, forming a two-person team. Both possess photography skills, and Whiteman holds an Honours degree in Design from the University of New South Wales. Their shoots are typically completed within a day, though some elaborate projects, like a European montage requiring daily millisecond captures, can extend longer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions prompted Whiteman to adapt her content, shifting focus to lifestyle and fashion. This period allowed for reflection, and she now aims for fewer but more impactful travel experiences, expressing appreciation for her profession compared to her previous hourly wage jobs in retail and dental assisting.
