United States Aminah Nieves, a Taino and Coahuiltecan actress from Hammond, Indiana, has emerged as a significant talent in television and film, notably recognized for her breakthrough role in "1923."

Born on October 2, 1995, in Hammond, Indiana, Aminah Nieves developed an early interest in performing, initially aspiring to become a touring symphonic musician. Her passion shifted to acting during high school, where a newly established performing arts school in Hammond provided her with opportunities in theatrical productions. Following her graduation, Nieves moved to New York City to pursue her acting career. For nearly a decade, she faced challenges, primarily securing uncredited supporting roles in various short and independent films such as “Blueberry” (2021) and “Dogwood” (2021). During this period in New York, Nieves juggled multiple jobs, working as an herbalist, operating her own herbal shop, and serving as a doula, alongside a retail position, to support herself.
After experiencing a period of struggle and returning to her parents’ home with limited resources, Nieves remained dedicated to her craft. A pivotal moment in her career came with the audition for Taylor Sheridan’s television drama “1923.” Initially hesitant due to the intense themes of the role, her mother’s encouragement to embrace the opportunity, recognizing its significance for their community, proved instrumental in her decision. Her portrayal of Teonna Rainwater in “1923” (2022–2025) garnered critical acclaim and brought widespread recognition, establishing her as a prominent actress. This role allowed her to address historical injustices faced by indigenous peoples, a theme she deeply connects with.
Nieves’s performance in “1923” not only earned her praise but also initiated broader conversations about indigenous representation and historical accuracy in media. Her commitment to portraying honest and realistic narratives earned her the Breakthrough Award. Her career continues to advance with upcoming projects, including a role as Sergeant Mary Nolan in the film “A House of Dynamite” (2025) and a recurring role in season 2 of the HBO crime drama “Task,” set for release in May 2026. These roles highlight her progression from independent film work to significant parts in major television and film productions.
