Krishnakumar Dinesh Karthik, born on June 1, 1985, in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India, embarked on his cricketing journey at age 10, initially focusing on batting before embracing wicket-keeping. His father, a former first-division cricketer whose career was cut short by educational commitments, encouraged his pursuit of the sport and honed his reflexes by practicing with hard leather balls at high speeds. Karthik’s early domestic career saw him debut for the Tamil Nadu under-14 team in 1999, progressing to the under-19 team by 2000. He made his senior first-class debut in the 2002-2003 season for Tamil Nadu as a wicket-keeper against Baroda. He initially struggled with wicket-keeping errors but later improved his technique after attending a specialized camp.
Karthik’s international debut for the Indian cricket team came in 2004, initially in Test cricket filling in for Parthiv Patel, and later that year in ODIs against England. He was a member of the squad that secured victory in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. A significant turning point in his Test career was in 2007 when, as an opener, he scored his maiden Test century against Bangladesh and was India’s leading scorer in the Test tour of England, contributing to India’s first series win there in 21 years. Over his career, he played 26 Test matches, 94 ODIs, and 60 T20 Internationals for India, demonstrating notable longevity in a competitive cricketing landscape.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Karthik played for several franchises, including Delhi Daredevils (2008-2010, 2014), Kings XI Punjab (2011), Mumbai Indians (2012-2013), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2015, 2022-2024), Gujarat Lions (2016-2017), and captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (2018-2020), leading them to the playoffs in 2018. Post-IPL playing career, he transitioned into commentary, working for Sky Sports and ICC events, and also took on coaching roles, becoming a mentor and batting coach for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
