Andrea Navedo is an American actor and singer-songwriter currently best known for playing Xiomara “Xo” Gloriana Villanueva, one of the stars of Jane the Virgin, a satirical dramedy that won numerous awards and been nominated for the Best Musical or Comedy Series Golden Globe. Navedo herself won three awards for her role, including the Imagen Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has also established herself as a voice actor, voicing characters in DreamWorks’ animated series Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Disney’s Elena of Avalor. In 2020, she appeared in two episodes of Mrs America, a poignant miniseries about the Civil Rights movement rated as one of the year’s best shows by the American Film Institute.
Yet before Jane the Virgin and her subsequent success, Navedo had already built a reputation and resume, having been appearing in films and television series since the mid-1990s. Her first big break came in 1995 when she began appearing as Linda Soto in ABC’s long-running soap opera One Life to Live. After leaving the show, she joined another soap, Guiding Light, playing Theresa Sandoval for a year. At the dawn of the 2000s, she won the recurring role of Detective Ana Cordova in Law & Order.
In 2014, after a run of successful roles, Navedo got her biggest break yet with Jane the Virgin, an affectionate satire of Latin American telenovas that proved an enduring hit with both audiences and critics. Navedo stayed with the show throughout its five-year run and has subsequently capitalised on its success with ever higher-profile roles.
