Andrew McGrath

Andrew McGrath has established himself as a key player and leader for the Essendon Football Club, transitioning from a top draft pick to a vice-captain. After being selected as the first overall pick in the 2016 national draft by the Essendon Football Club, Andrew McGrath immediately showcased his elite talent and leadership. Prior to his draft, McGrath was recognized as an All-Australian and co-captain for Vic Metro in the 2016 AFL Under 18 Championships. He made his highly anticipated AFL debut with Essendon in the opening round of the 2017 season, delivering an impressive 22 disposals.

His inaugural year saw him earn an AFL Rising Star nomination in round four for a standout 28-disposal and four-tackle game, and he kicked his first AFL goal in round six. McGrath’s exceptional first year culminated in winning the prestigious Ron Evans Medal as the AFL Rising Star, receiving 51 out of a possible 55 votes, and being named the AFLPA Best First Year Player, alongside a spot in the 22under22 team. McGrath consistently demonstrated his leadership and adaptability in subsequent seasons, earning selections to the competitive 22under22 team in 2018 and 2019, before being appointed captain of the team in 2020. That same year, he successfully transitioned to a full-time midfield role and was recognized with Essendon’s Adam Ramanauskas Most Courageous Player award.

His long-term commitment to the Essendon Football Club was underscored by a six-year contract extension signed in 2024, securing his tenure until at least 2030. Reflecting his consistent performance and importance to the team, McGrath was one of only four players to play every game for Essendon in the 2025 AFL season, further cementing his status as a key player and leader.
